Native Plant Rescue Operations—Plant Assessments and Rescue Oversight

Many of our medium to high quality native habitats are vanishing because of increased development and suburbanization, as well as other rapidly changing land uses. With sufficient timing, it is possible to conduct native plant salvage operations in these natural areas before plants are destroyed. This is an excellent way to save valuable native plants that would otherwise be eliminated, and potentially provide them to local community and non-profit projects that typically have limited funds to purchase native plants.

We provide thorough site evaluations in all seasons as to the potential for native plant rescues, and provide recommendations for the critical timing of plant removal and proper management of plant stock to maximize survivability. We can provide all necessary equipment and holding areas for plants, if needed. We can also provide "hands-on" instruction and oversight to community and organizational volunteers recruited to assist in the plant rescue and installation process.

Designing Constructed Wetlands for Passive Treatment of Acid Mine Drainage

Properly sized constructed wetlands have been used successfully to treat Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) from abandoned coal mine sites. Without treatment AMD can impair streams and waterways by lowering pH and greatly reducing the diversity of aquatic life. Constructed Passive Treatment Wetlands are one of the simplest and least expensive systems for treating relatively low metal concentrations of Fe and Mn. More complex wetland treatment systems are needed for higher concentrations of AMD. We provide assistance in wetland design, wetland sizing, and the selection and installation of appropriate native vegetation that can tolerate treatment conditions.

Educational Presentations and Workshops

HABITATS provides Native Plant Workshops, Habitat Restoration Workshops, and other ecological education and training programs to a wide range of non-profit organizations, community groups, agencies, schools, and businesses. Most workshops involve field exposure for a more thorough, hands-on understanding of native plant biology and ecology. Workshops are ideally suited to training key staff and volunteers in native plant identification, invasive non-native plant identification, habitat restoration techniques, plant propagation, etc.
