HABITATS is currently providing local-genetic wetland plants and vegetation management services to the recently opened Red Stone Farm Wetland Mitigation Bank located in Pike County, Ohio. Red Stone Farm is situated in an historic wetland area of southern Ohio known as the "Beech Flats", once dominated by vast expanses of forested wetlands. Today, essentially this entire wetland ecosystem has been drained and converted to agriculture and other development. The wetland mitigation bank at Red Stone Farm represents a significant effort to restore a small portion of this forested wetland system, and conservation easements are in place to protect if for perpetuity.

Phase 1 wetland restoration (approximately 100 acres) was initiated in early 2009 and includes the following:

  • Tree Installation – Planting 18,000 bare-root native wetland trees and shrubs.
  • Herbaceous Revegetation – Seeding over 35 different native perennial wetland plants.
  • Invasive Vegetation Management – Controlling the establishment and spread of highly invasive non-native plants.
  • Vegetation and Hydrology Monitoring — Collecting plant and water data for agency reports.
